WHAT ARE THE OTRANTO-ARCHIVES?
Created in late 2009 the original Otranto-Archive was a means for sharing my views, thoughts, likings and interesting bits and pieces with a (hopefully) interested audience in the form of a blog. Not just any blog, though, but one about "everything gothic", or what I deem thus, in my entirely subjective point of view:
Obscure post-punk and New Wave music, romantic literature, dark and weird movies, etc.
Soon the archives expanded to my YouTube chanel as I began making video clips of reciting poetry, presenting lesser-known bands or talking about the history of the Gothic. For sharing pictures, citations and videos without much commentary the Otranto tumblr was also soon created and my occassional writings began being published at my ISSUU account.
By that point the archives had turned into a (more or less) multimedia project, but was still entirely in German. The tumblr had already awakened my desire to communicate with a more international, English-speaking audience, and when I started interviewing foreign bands (She Past Away from Turkey, and ·Y· from Spain) I began posting in English as well.
The very platform you are reading these lines at is thus the only logical conclusion: An entirely English branch of the Otranto archives in which you will find English versions of pre-existing as well as new articles, some of them being aimed exclusively at an internation audience and being published only here.
Every now and then some articles about something entirely non-goth-related might pop up, but they will be marked thus for your convenient skipping if you're only here for the spooky stuff ;-)
WHY IS IT CALLED "OTRANTO"-ARCHIVES?
The late 18th century novel "The Castle of Otranto" by Horace Wallpole is usually regarded the first "Gothic Novel" and thus the beginning of Gothic fiction and Gothic art in general. Thus it seemed a fitting title for a blog about everything gothic and has basically nothing to do with the original Otranto area in Italy.
